IT Operations & Infrastructure Engineer

Raleigh, NC

Position Summary

10 Federal is a vertically integrated self-storage company operating 135 properties. Over the past year, the company has shifted from buying third-party software to building platforms in-house, creating a need for someone to own the IT operations and infrastructure layer underneath that work. This is a broad, hands-on role for a company of under 100 people with an outsized technology footprint — the person in this role will own end-user IT, corporate network infrastructure, identity and security administration, and Azure platform operations end-to-end, working closely with the engineering team building the company's in-house platforms.

Key Responsibilities

End-User IT & Device Management

  • Own the day-to-day IT experience for the whole company, including onboarding and offboarding, laptop provisioning, and device lifecycle management
  • Manage devices through Microsoft Intune, including compliance policies, application deployment, and patching
  • Provide front-line IT support and build automation/self-service tools to reduce recurring support demand over time

Network & Physical Infrastructure

  • Own the corporate network at the Raleigh office, including SonicWall firewalls, HP Aruba switching, wireless, VPN, and remote access
  • Serve as the escalation point for connectivity issues across the facility portfolio, where site-level networking supports gate systems, cameras, kiosks, and other on-site technology

Identity, Security & Compliance

  • Own identity and access management across the Microsoft estate, including Entra ID, conditional access, and multi-factor authentication
  • Design and maintain a security group and permissioning model that reflects the company's actual organizational structure
  • Administer SharePoint, including site architecture and permissions
  • Use Microsoft Purview for data governance, retention, and compliance posture
  • Own the joiner-mover-leaver process end to end, ensuring access is granted and revoked correctly and predictably
  • Serve as the internal tactical counterpart to the company's third-party cybersecurity partner — tuning configurations and rules, administering security tooling layered on the Microsoft environment, and executing remediation

Azure Platform Operations

  • Set and enforce standards for resource group structure, naming conventions, tagging, and role-based access across the company's Azure environment
  • Define the repeatable pattern for provisioning and decommissioning development, staging, and production environments
  • Own the deployment path so changes are tested in development before reaching production
  • Set the model for managed identities, service accounts, secrets, and platform-level security
  • Monitor Azure subscription cost and identify opportunities to optimize spend
  • Codify and automate infrastructure processes wherever possible

Backup, Disaster Recovery & Incident Response

  • Own the company's backup strategy for the systems and platforms under this role's ownership
  • Own the technology disaster recovery (DR) plan, including documented recovery procedures and periodic testing
  • Contribute technology input to the company-wide business continuity plan; the plan itself is owned by leaders across the business, with the DR plan serving as Technology's component of it
  • Triage and resolve technology incidents, escalating per the organization's incident response plan; this role handles the technical side of incident response and does not own the organizational plan

AI & Automation

  • Identify recurring tickets, manual provisioning steps, or compliance reviews that can be automated or handled by an AI agent
  • Actively evaluate and adopt AI tooling to improve efficiency across IT operations

Qualifications & Skills

Required

  • At least 3 years of professional IT experience (5 years preferred), with demonstrated hands-on ownership of systems rather than ticket-queue work alone
  • Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft ecosystem: Entra ID, Intune, Microsoft 365, and SharePoint administration
  • Practical Azure experience across resource management, role-based access, and cost management
  • Comfort with networking fundamentals and physical network hardware
  • Demonstrated experience building structured systems or processes out of unstructured ones
  • No degree or certification is required; candidates are evaluated on demonstrated ability

Preferred

  • Experience with Microsoft Purview or other compliance tooling
  • Infrastructure as code experience (Bicep, Terraform, or similar)
  • Scripting experience in PowerShell or Python
  • Experience working in a small or fast-moving organization
  • Relevant degree or industry certifications are welcome but not required

Performance Expectations

Success in this role will be defined through a 90-day plan established with the hiring manager.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Standard office environment; extended periods of computer use
  • No travel is required for this role
  • Occasional work in the network closet or similar physical infrastructure spaces
  • Occasionally required to lift/move IT equipment up to 25 lbs
  • May require occasional on-call availability for critical system issues
